My background
I live in Tasmania, the southernmost state of Australia. This is the island of four seasons, where you do wear extra clothing in winter, so naturally a knitter's paradise. It also happens to produce some of the finest merino wool in the country.
By the time I was 6 or 7 years of age my grandmother and one of my aunts were showing me how to knit. Knitting was commonplace in the house that I grew up in. There were always projects on the go and various friends of my grandmother came round to visit with their knitting bags in tow. There were afternoons by the fireside with lots of conversation and the clicking of needles before serving beautiful afternoon teas with scones, jam, cream and sponge cakes.
While I can't remember producing many items as a child I do remember the first significant garment I made when I was 18, for my boyfriend, now my husband. At 68, he still has the jumper, as well worn as it is. It's a beautiful cable jumper made with 8 ply Patons Totem yarn, yes still a favourite with many knitters. Design 7 from Book 948. I still have the book. The cable jumper is on the front cover in green.
Now once I was pregnant expecting my first child a renewed interest in knitting began and has continued to this day. I spent hours working on lovely projects and devouring the regular copies of "Mon Tricot" that arrived monthly at the newsagent. I still have all the copies and find them a great source of inspiration.
